Pennant Flags for Boats

Pennant flags for boats are decorative long, narrow flags, often triangular in shape and tapering to a point. They can be used to represent various meaning, such as signalling a boat’s identity, signalling distress, showing a boats position in a race and more!

Keep reading for a breakdown of the different types of pennant flags for boats…

Types of Pennant Flags for Boats

There are several different types of pennant flags that are used on boats. Here’s a rundown of the common types:

Signal Pennants

These flags are used for communication purposes and come in different colours and patterns to represent different messages. Most boats use the Internation Code of Signals (ICS) that uses a set of coloured flags to communicate between ships and the shore.

Each flag or pennant represents a letter of the alphabet or a specific signal. For example, a boat flying the letter “U” pennant may be signalling that passing boats are running into danger and should change course.

Some boating pennants also use numbers in combination with other flags to send specific messages.

Boat Club Pennants

Many boat clubs also have their own pennant flags to indicate that the vessel’s owner is a member of the club. These flags usually feature the club’s logo or name.

Yacht Racing Pennants

Pennants are also used in yacht racing to signify various race-related statues, such as the vessel’s current racing position, division or class.

Ceremonial Pennants

Pennants are also often flown during special events and ceremonies. These pennants may signal specific celebrations, milestones or maritime festivals and are often more decorative and multicoloured.
